Friedberg’s Triad is a pathway to opioid free anesthesia (OFA) and PONV free outcomes without antiemetics. Adequate regional analgesia is a cornerstone of OFA success in eliminating opioids as well as opioid rescue.
History is served in this new book of selections from Friedberg’s 93 publications of letters, articles and textbook chapters about OFA and brain monitoring. The appendix contains the over 240 subsequent publication citations as well as 80 anesthesia textbook citations including Miller’s Anesthesia 2010, 2015 eds (Ch. 11).
In 1992, it was unknown if propofol blocked ketamine hallucinations (Ch. 12). Friedberg, a board certified, private practice anesthesiologist, found a solution to PONV by eliminating opioids and administering hallucination-free ketamine after propofol but prior to incision. So notorious was the 1992 reputation of ketamine, Friedberg coined the circumlocution ‘non-opioid, preemptive analgesia or NOPA’ to avoid using the term (Ch. 11). In this process, patients experienced minimal postoperative discomfort.
Friedberg’s Triad, Opioid Free Anesthesia Papers 1993-2024 offers valuable insights into a modern approach to anesthesia that prioritizes patient safety and recovery. It is a must-read for anesthesia professionals looking to refine their techniques and stay at the forefront of opioid-free practices. With detailed case studies, research-backed strategies, and a clear passion for patient care, Friedberg provides a thorough guide that challenges conventional norms in the field.
